Is Building Your Own House Worth It?
Many clients come to us with dreams of building their own home, but also a bit of trepidation about how easy it might be, and uncertainty over whether it’s the right solution for them. The truth is that it’s not for everyone, but for some people it can be the perfect solution. Let’s look at some of the main considerations.
Building your own home gives you the opportunity to customise every aspect of the design. This includes the layout of the rooms, the size of the rooms, the size and position of windows and doors, and much more. It allows you to create a home which meets your needs and reflects your personal tastes and interests.
It also allows you to have control over energy efficiency and invest in new technologies, meaning you can manage running costs in the future and be less reliant on energy companies for fuel, electricity and even water. You can ensure your home is well insulated and easy to maintain.
You could even choose to project-manage the build yourself, meaning you can select the contractors yourself and oversee the quality of workmanship. Being involved in the build from the start will give you a greater understanding of how a home comes together, even if you have no prior experience, and you can ensure that the finished article meets your expectations.
It’s not always sunshine and rainbows, though. There will be challenges along the way – maybe in buying the land, or obtaining planning permission or Building Regs approval, or even working with tradesmen and managing your budget. But almost all of our clients tell us that the feeling of pride, achievement and satisfaction make it worthwhile in the end.
So is it worth it for you? Well, you’re the only person who can answer that. Just know that if you decide to take the plunge, the team at Houseplansdirect (and many other professionals) will be there to help, guide and advise whenever you need it.
