CC-03 – Staircase Detail

Staircase detail: This practical drawing supports the design and construction of a typical private stair in accordance with Approved Document K and, where applicable, Approved Document M and BS 5395-1.

Coordinated plan and sectional views cover the maximum 42-degree stair pitch, permitted rise and going, minimum headroom, landing sizes and clearance from door swings. Requirements for stair width, handrails, guarding heights and maximum openings within balustrades are also included.

Typical timber staircase components and sizes are identified, including strings, treads, risers, newel posts, handrails and balustrades. Additional guidance covers guarding to upper-storey windows and other openings positioned close to floor level. Presented at 1:20 scale, the detail is suitable for residential Building Regulations drawing packages, subject to confirmation of site dimensions and coordination with the project-specific stair design and dwelling-access category.
