Guarding detail: This illustrated drawing shows the protection required at internal landings, external balconies and full-height window or door openings fitted with Juliet balconies.
The drawing identifies a minimum barrier height of 900mm above finished floor level for internal landings and 1100mm for external and Juliet balconies. It also shows where edge protection is required when a change in level exceeds 600mm.
Additional guidance covers vertical, non-climbable infill and openings restricted so that a 100mm diameter sphere cannot pass through. Typical fixing arrangements and the relationship between the barrier, supporting construction and finished floor level are also illustrated. The detail is suitable for residential Building Regulations drawing packages. All barriers and fixings should be structurally designed for the project and supporting construction.
